I always wore this little red dress

That Mother gifted me on my seventeenth.

Parties, weddings, and picnics alike

I’d flaunt it, I was told it flattered my teeth.

It had bonny frills and puffy sleeves

and oh, was it ever so soft.

They’d ask me why I wouldn’t take it off

I’d gush, my spirits it kept aloft.

One day, fate struck me ill,

My dress caught on a fence

It ripped the skirt from seam to hem;

To sew, I’d have to pay a pretty pence

I cried and wailed; heart in pieces-

oh, my little red dress

What on dear earth would I wear now?

For days, poor Mother found me a mess.

On my eighteenth, though,

a little blue dress, oh, what a lovely surprise!

I’d flaunt it everywhere, dawn to dusk,

for I was told it brought out my eyes.

I’d dance in the gardens, spin with glee,

come sunset, dress soaked in mud and sun

But I didn’t shed a tear, for I was quite certain

on my next birthday, I’d have another one.
