Caterpillar Love Lost

By Dinny

There once were two caterpillars.

The male caterpillar fell deeply in love with the female. To express his affection, he would carve heart-shaped holes in leaves, hoping she would notice his devotion. One day, he even presented her with a perfect heart-shaped leaf and confessed, “I love you with all my heart and soul.”

But the female caterpillar was too choosy. She believed that if she ignored him long enough, he would try harder, and besides—there were so many other male caterpillars around. She dismissed his efforts and replied coldly, “Please don’t expect me to have anything for you.”

Heartbroken, the male caterpillar decided not to waste his time and energy any longer. “If she doesn’t want me, that’s her choice,” he thought.

Not long after, a heavy storm blew him away to another plant, separating them forever.

Time passed. To her surprise, the female caterpillar began to miss him. She thought often of the love he had shown her. Meanwhile, the male caterpillar spun himself into a cocoon and eventually emerged as a butterfly.

Curious about his past, he flew back to the plant where she lived. The female recognised him instantly, even though he looked entirely different. Overcome with emotion, she confessed, “I love you with all my heart. I’ll do anything for you now.”

But the butterfly shook his head gently and said, “You’re too late. I’m not the same anymore. The one who loved you as a caterpillar no longer exists. I’ve changed.”

She didn’t understand. She begged, pleaded, and cried. But he tried to explain: “My past self was different. I’ve evolved. I’m not who I was.”

Determined, she promised him, “Just wait. Soon I’ll be a butterfly too, and then we’ll be the same.”

Days later, she emerged from her cocoon, beautiful and radiant. She rushed to him and said joyfully, “Look! Now we’re both butterflies. We can finally be together.”

But the male butterfly only replied, “You don’t understand. You are still too late. I’m not the same as I once was. You are not the problem—I am. You remained the same, but I have changed, and I continue to change every day. Even if I look the same, I am no longer who I was.”

Her heart broke.

This is not the love story of two caterpillars.

It is the story of humans.

Many women take too long to decide, even when they love someone. They wait for men to take every initiative, forgetting that time waits for no one. The person who loves you today will not remain the same forever. People change—inevitably, constantly, and naturally.

Clinging to the past, or to the idea of who someone used to be, only leads to heartbreak.

Change is the only constant. And those who fail to recognise it risk losing what could have been—forever.
