“Do this for your brother,”

“Do that for your mother.”

You are his only sister,

her only daughter—

their only friend.

But when does someone

do something for me?

“It’s fine.”

“He’s not like you.”

“It’s fine.”

“She’s tired.”

Suck it in. Keep quiet.

Well, is it so wrong

to want to be held,

swaddled in love

like a newborn?

Everything is his his his—

Never mine.

I trade my wants for him,

my hours for her,

until there is nothing of me

left to give.

I am the youngest,

yet forgotten—

A backup dancer on their stage,

an unpaid counselor in their living room.

I hold the title of the baby,

while he gets the cradle.

What if I stepped back

and let the pillars shatter?

Would anyone notice

I was carrying the roof?

So mother, help me.

Brother, do this for me.

After all—

We’re friends, right?
