Brown
By Donna Nongkhlaw
I wallow long in the dark shadows
tobacco breath lurches the gallows
too still my will
too steep the hill
regrets bite stronger than my teeth
while pleasure wears a bridal wreath
With sleeves depleted of witty tricks
spill orison thick with scented sticks
restore my will
give me the skills
to beat the strife and come to life
receive the gift, a reprieving light
Let nonce be just a bitter trial
as I battle for days that are worthwhile
rolled leaves upturned
heaved and burnt
scraped knees will heal
I too will one day be relieved.
