Breathless

Every time we kissed, I inhaled a whiff

Of what made me feel whole.

You stuck a piece of you in me;

A rotten little hole,

In the walls of my heart's neighbour

Who choked while we eloped.

I shook him off, for he wasn't my mother

To nag me about who I sleep with

Our affair wasn't love, it was better than that

No couple I knew got on like us

They fought and loved like naive teens

While you and I sat quietly, no words in between.

But our silences were never awkward,

They were mildly ecstatic, leaving me nauseous

Each time we weren't at it.

Oh hell! How your absence made me panic!

At first I was oblivious, that we were honeymooning in hell

Until you hit me, once again,

Your warmth had suddenly lost its charm

And then I asked myself, "Could she mean any harm?"

For all you did and will ever do

Is steal my breath, even when I'll hate you

I loved you so much that it made me sick

You turned me into a lunatic

So now I say to you, with a final hit

"Goodbye, you sublime piece of stick"

Flicking a switch lighting my last Red,

Dear cigarette, our romance is dead
