Brave Little Firefighter

Years from now, when the other firemen find his body,

they will pull him out of the burnt ruins,

and take him away.

The media will hail him as a hero.

They will sing his praises for saving everyone else.

They will remember him as the only casualty.

Then they will move on to the next story.

But tonight, he is alive and

on the couch with his mother.

There is a storm outside and he is scared.

His little hands hold her tighter.

The thunder roars as he starts to shake.

His mother kisses him on the forehead

as she holds him close.

“Bravery will find you love, and there will be a time

when you aren’t scared anymore,

and you wont need me”

And when the time comes, he will be brave.

He will panic,

He will cry,

He will think of her warmth as the fire engulfs his body.

But he will be brave.

But not tonight.

Tonight he is a boy.

Tonight he is scared.

Tonight, he is in his mother’s arms.

Tonight, he is just a boy afraid of the storm.

Just a boy.
