Bones

Original Submission by Aimee Botha

I cannot break now from the regime

put upon me.

Like armour laced up,

my fingers tightening the knots.

A soul alight,

its flames seen only

through the burns upon my arms,

and the ashes at my feet.

As my hair cleaves gently from my scalp,

loving me still, but wishing me the best,

declaring that it can no longer

be a part of me.

It’s my grand master plan to turn

my novelty and ingenuity,

my beauty and the best of me

into Bones.

My ribcage declares

what is left.

And I, too consumed by apathy,

fail to see the rest of me

fade away

into insecurity

shame

pain.

For this body is just a frame

To hold the pictures

and the memories

of a life now dull and grey–

Burnt away

by the flames that eat

at my sanity and sanctity,

my colour and weight.

So I step on the scale

to gauge if my insecurities

have tipped the balance in their favour,

as my mind and personality give way to these Bones.

Success.

I am light as a feather.

But it's not what I thought it would be,

to be swept this way and that,

by the winds that blow through me

now too light to settle upon the rock,

too weightless to stand through the storm.

The weight that I cursed–

it used to anchor me…

Oh! What was the cost?
