Blood Licks the Sweat
Blood licks the sweat;
Life breathes only to fall.
Pipal trees curl beneath dry leaves,
Sheltering weak-winged birds.
The water lilies no longer gaze at the sky;
Their leaves and stems lie sunk in mulch.
Ants feast upon the lifeless fish,
While grieving animals mourn in the shade.
It is not La Niña or El Niño’s ruse;
It is the reckless vandals haunting Earth.
Imperialists sleepwalk toward their reign-
As waking oceans rise to rout their dreams.
Yet space broods over life.
A fierce new seed will sprout,
With silent strength to guide the way-
And shatter the shackles at their roost.
