apology to bugs

there’s something especially tragic about the way bugs twitch and squirm as they slowly slip into death’s embrace

this death must feel like an eternity in relation to their short little lives

yes, they’re pests

the heinous crime of being born into such a tiny, buzzing body

carrying features shaped over millions of years

honed towards optimal survival

a morsel of immortality from a mothers face forever present on her progeny

yet all you can do is fight for the encumbrance of consciousness

its a burden so painfully sought after

the blessing of life, ever so fleeting

yours even more so

i’m sorry the last thing you will feel is the crushing weight of a daunting beast rather than the warmth of someone cherished

it was a gesture of compassion, the sickening squelch of a flattened carcass under my shoe

but i am just as small

and no one wishes to die with no one there at all
