ஆம்புலன்ஸ்

வெய்யில் வெப்பம் வியர்வை யோடு

பைய நகரும் பேருந் திற்குள்

இருக்கும் எரிச்சல் அதனையும் மீறி

பெருக்கெடுத் ததுஓர் பெருங்கோவம் எனக்கு;

”ஆபத்(து)! இங்கோர் ஆளுயிர்க்(கு) ஆபத்(து)!

ஆபத்(து)!” எனவே அலறிடும் ஆம்புலன்ஸ்

அதற்கு வழிவிடும் அறிவே இன்றி

முதன்மை எனக்கென் வேலையே என்பர்போல்

குறுக்கும் நெடுக்கும் புகுந்து முன்னேறி

இருக்கும் நெரிசலை இன்னும் நெரிக்கும்

வாகன ஓட்டிகள் வன்மை கண்டு!

மாகணம் பொருந்திய மக்களே கேளும்,

ஓருயிர் காக்கும் சீரிய நோக்கில்

விரைந்து செல்ல இரைந்து கூவும்

ஆம்புலன்ஸ் அதற்கு வழிவிட் டிடுங்கள்,

நாமோ நமக்கு நெருங்கிய ஒருவரோ

அடிபட்(டு) அதற்குள் படுத்திருக் கையில்பிறர்

வழிவிட்டி டாதே வன்மை காட்டினால்

கழிபெரும் துயரம் அடைவோ மன்றே?

’பிறர்துய ரம்அதைத் தன்துயர் போலே

அறிந்துகொள் ளாதவன் அறிவது வீண்’என

தமிழ்பெரும் வள்ளுவர் தானுரைத் தாரே,

இனியே னும்வழி விடாமல் இருக்கும்

தனிபெரும் பாவம் அதைத் தவிர்ப்பீரே!

-எனவே கூறி என்மனம் உற்ற

சினம்வருத் தம்இரண் டினையும் தணிக்க

இதுபோல் ஓர்கவி இயற்றி மக்கள்

பொதுவில் படிக்க இடலாம் என்றே

எண்ணம் ஒன்று ஏற்பட் டதுவே,

பின்னர் எந்தன் புத்தியில் உரைத்தது

அவசரத்திற்கு வழிவிடும் அறிவில் லாதவன்

கவிதையைப் படித்தா கரையப் போகிறான்?

நாம்முன்னால் போவதைக் காட்டிலும் ஓருயிர்

தான்முன்னால் போதல் தடுத்திடுவோம்! - ஆம், மக்காள்,

ஆம்புலன்ஸ் சென்றிட ஆங்குவழி செய்தலே

தாம்பிறர்க் காற்றும் தவம்!

Approximate translation:

Ambulance

More than the irritation of being

In a slow moving bus

Under the scorching Sun, with dripping sweat

A greater rage gripped me:

On seeing the heartless nature of

Drivers who put their own agenda first

Not making way for the ambulance

That is shouting

'Danger! Danger for someone's life,

Danger!' Ignoring which

They just wiggle their way further up

And make the traffic jam severe!

Oh great people, hear me:

Leave way for the ambulance

That is shouting loudly

In a noble attempt to save a life,

Won't we suffer immensely

If the one inside it is our relative or friend,

When others are not leaving way for it?

The great poet of Tamil, Thiruvalluvar said

'Their knowledge is a waste

Those who do not consider other's suffering as their own',

Henceforth do not commit the great sin

Of not leaving way for an ambulance!

-I thus wanted to write a poem

As above, expressing the anger and grief

I experienced in that instance,

And post it for public to read and realize,

But then realized that a person who's

Not having the basic sense to leave way for an ambulance

Will he/she ever read a poem and realize?

Let's give priority to an ambulance

Which is trying to avoid the loss of a life

People, that is the best penance

We can do for others!
