Ambiguous Loss

By Catherine Craig

2026

I mourn you, yet you are still alive.

I miss you, and I still try to forget.

Beauty and sorrow

intertwined in what we were,

in all that we shared

and all that we couldn't keep.

Time passes, though nothing quite ends.

You have become a memory,

a presence I can no longer reach.

How strange

to grieve what has not disappeared,

to miss what still exists somewhere,

to carry an absence

that has no shape.

And still,

where grief exists,

so too does love and laughter.

The beautiful was real.

The sorrow real, too.

With time,

the memories grow faint,

their edges softening.

Perhaps this is what remains

of something that has changed

beyond recognition.

You will never be present,

but you are not quite gone.

I will always miss you.
