Addressing Four Am Demons
By Antonio Rodrigues
Burning embers in the glowing barbecue pit
fired light in the Doomsday Man's coal-black eyes,
As a stealthy shadow slashed the silver moon,
With a chilly smile he said I will get to you soon!
Come sample my wares at my celebrated grill,
Come feel the absence of exalted thrill,
Paranoia, doubt, past hurts, despair,
Guaranteed to put your mind beyond repair!
Indulge in this bite-sized chunk of loneliness,
Charred at the edges with gut, -wrenching fear,
Feel the hard edge of anger in this delightful savoury,
Marinated in guilt, resentment and discourtesy!
Why do you do it? asked the happy young girl,
As she danced with joy, her skirt in a swirl,
There is no pride in selling negativity,
But so much in gratitude and serenity!
I am not selling, all I have is free and up for grabs,
I want to pull you all down like in a basket of crabs,
Nourish your fake brotherhood and pretend sisterhood,
It's easy to lie still, in a cocoon of self-hatred, like wood!
You will always be there, the young one, in alarm, cried,
But I don't have to taste your deceptive wares,
I recognise my silent fears, worries, weary cares,
I will partake of hope, awe, wonder and love, deep-fried!
