“A truth finally accepted”

"Always available, always there,

but only when it's convenient enough for you to care."

Healed enough to walk away from the closed door,

but humane enough to turn and catch a glimpse of it sometimes

not knocking this time, though.

Memories of silence after the ringtone stops ringing

and the call falls through to the mailbox

have me deleting the number from my phone.

Voicemails and texts never going through

leaving no clues

of ways for me to find my way back to you.

The quiet feels different now,

not the kind that waits for your name to appear on the screen,

but the kind that settles gently in the room

like a truth finally accepted.

Months have passed

and you left the door open on purpose

I'd rather choose not to know,

now that I choose to have mine closed.

Compassion and interest worn thin by excused disrespect and time,

Erasing the thought of ever reaching for the handle.

And if the wind ever carries your voice

back to the place where I once waited,

it will only find echoes now.

Some doors were meant to be locked,

when the heart finally understands

it no longer belongs there.
