A Tribute

Original Submission by Elysian Gold

I've no guide like Dante did Virgil

And into the waters I wade blind

Without the eloquence that belongs to Camus,

I have only the words in my mind.

This is no Odyssey and I am no Odysseus,

There is no broadsword held fast in my right hand

As I wander through the worlds of these lines —

I am Ophelia in the labyrinth of Pan.

Though this world was made at the touch of my pen,

I seek not to rule, not to reign, not to be King.

I am no prophet, and here is no great matter;

I merely hear the mockingbirds whence they sing.

The yellow brick road beneath my pilgrim feet

Was paved long before the day that I came

To this place in search of brighter stars.

I do not care if no one speaks my name,

For I have found gold beyond what Midas dared dream,

Treasure beyond what all villains are known to seek;

I have heard the words of the Madman and the Forerunner

And their wisdom could never leave this world more bleak

Than before I knew their names, before they led me

To the art of creation in language and tongue,

For without poetry, without art, without means,

Never a new song would be sung.

I claim to be no messiah, no Lisan al-Gaib,

I am all but a traveler through the lines and pages

That have warmed me on so many a cold night,

That have held me fast through the ages.

From Hitchens to Adams, from Kaur to Gibran,

I have had worlds and paths laid at my feet,

Mine to trace the veins and fingerprints of,

Fresh air for me to breathe.

I write that I may reach into the depths

And pull forth but one soul,

That from my words, one broken thing

May be incrementally more whole.
