A Thousand Times She Died

At the threshold stood an old woman,
her hands breaking the mere silence
by forging an alliance with prayers,
each bead a bargain, each whisper a wound.
All her life she bribed courage,
hid in the corner’s dust and shadow,
stilling death when grief
dismantled her conformity, bone by bone.
She never understood why the edge of life
shook her hair, her tired thigh;
why the tranquil breath
read her true name in forgotten rhymes.
She found no tongue for the absurd
infatuation with her long-lost pride.
She poised in the dark, feeble, ancient,
a monument to things unsaid.
Naked, her bare eyes recited the past
like a helpless child’s recitation,
stumbling, halting, true.
For every day, a thousand times she died.
She died. And died again. And still.
