a steel pot sits on the stove top
water bubbling up the sides and
spilling over the edges
steam and mist kiss on the windows
they sit open to the afternoon light
to the chatter of two in the kitchen
the mother and daughter
chopping up tradition
food is something we carry with us
a part of ourselves that belongs
to those who came before us
those who come between us
those who bring us together
who bring us home
to a kitchen with a patchwork stove
to a mother who is both
taught and teaches
how to bring a steel pot
how to take a steal heart
and fill it with so much love
it comes to a boil
