A Soldier’s Lover

The war was over;

We could finally be together.

The medical station was over crowded,

I’d stormed in overjoyed and afraid.

A nurse, wearing a pitiful expression, said-

“We don’t have him in the ward”

I paused then,

My hands hanging loosely at my side.

No...this can’t be

He promised.

He’s out there!

Yes!

I ran out into the field

There were bodies everywhere,

I frantically ran around;

Screaming his name till my voice gave out.

Giving up I fell to the ground,

In front of a burned body;

The soldier’s face unrecognisable.

Then I looked down and...

There, on his finger...

So familiar, that shape,

That ring...

It was his.
