A SHACKLED LIBERTY
They lent me just the key and kept the door.
The dawn proclaimed me king; dusk hired my crown.
My flag ascends on winds I do not own;
My anthem limps on imported crutches.
I drink from rivers dug by my fathers,
Yet thirst itself is billed in foreign tongues.
My barns grow fat enough to feed the moon,
While children learn the grammar of empty bowls.
Who shackled whom, when freedom kneels for bread?
A nation walks alive, yet feeds its dead.
