I am your cat, and you are my human.

I follow your every path, loyal as a dog,

I do every trick you tell me to.

And yet, I’m not a lover,

never sit on your lap or lean

into your touch;

It’s poison I smell from miles away.

And yet it doesn’t dawn upon you

why I’m this way.

I yearned to be another stray,

but those thoughts erase as I

stare out the window and see those poor kits,

whom I thought you desired more.

Though I come to a harrowing conclusion

that you might not, as the sound of the broom

echoes in my mind…

And yet, late at night,

through a solemn haze

I walk the halls.

Through the never-ending silence,

a familiar scene, I claw on your door

in pathetic desperation,

just for you to hold out

your arms of poison

to carry me.

For I am a cat, and you are my human,

whose touch I loathe,

yet it brings me closure.
