A Morsel That Wet the Saffron Robe

​Before the bowl, filled with fragrant, rich delight,

Offered by faithful Thai hands in the morning light,

I raised the first morsel of rice to my lip,

Intending to taste it with a detached soul's grip...

​Yet, before the flavor could even unfold,

A heavy constriction caught my throat in its hold.

Amidst that bountiful, blessed dāna meal,

My heart began to sob, an unspoken grief to feel...

Across the vast ocean, on Lanka's far shore,

In a small, quiet home that I cherished before,

My wife, now alone, and my two children dear,

Flashed inside that rice bowl, vividly clear...

​"While I taste this richness, do they hunger instead?"

Confronting that raw, human question that bled,

Beneath the calm robe, a father's heart broke,

And tears stained the monkhood as memory awoke...

​Taking a deep breath, I still my wild mind,

Looking down at the tear-moistened bowl to find

The truth of impermanence in all worldly ties,

Fixing my thoughts where the sacred truth lies...

​May all the pure merit, the blessings profound,

That I have amassed on this newly ordained ground,

Reach the one who walked as my shadow through life,

And my two loving children, far from this strife.

May it protect them, and light up their way,

An ultimate blessing to end samsara's sway!
