A MIDFIELDER’S REDEMPTION
The heavy air inside the stadium smelled of grass and heat. On the big scoreboard, the red numbers read 87:12 minutes
The Phoenix were losing 2-1 against the Eagles.
To the five thousand people screaming in the stands, the boy in the Jersey Number 6 was like a ghost on the field. Kirio. He was the quiet midfielder who did all the hard work but always passed backward and stayed out of the spotlight. Where other players saw space to run, Kirio’s overthinking brain only saw danger and mistakes.
If you lose the ball here, they will score.
If you mess up this pass, the season is over.
His mind always ran too fast, worrying about a hundred bad things at once. It forced him to play safe just to stop the panic.
"Kirio! Move your feet! Get into the gap!"
The Phoenix captain yelled across the field, sounding desperate. The Eagles were the best team in the league, and they were pressing incredibly hard. They were trapping the Phoenix in their own half, closing down every single bit of space.
The center-back panicked and kicked a messy, spinning ball right toward Kirio.
Instantly, the biggest midfielder on the Eagles rushed at him, running at full speed to steal the ball. Kirio's chest felt tight. He wanted to just kick the ball away and escape the pressure. *Pass it back, his brain screamed. Get rid of it.
But he couldn't look back. The safe passing lane was completely blocked.
As the ball rolled fast toward his shoes, the clock in his head didn't stop-but his mind suddenly cleared up. The fear didn't completely go away, but it turned into sharp focus. He had practiced against this exact trap a thousand times alone at midnight. He saw how the defender was moving his hips to force him wide. For the first time, Kirio realized his overthinking wasn't a curse.
It was information.
Suddenly, the heavy mental chains of self-doubt and fear completely broke inside his head.
The hesitation was gone.
The Eagles defender jumped in, eyes locked on the ball, totally sure Kirio was going to freeze and panic. He was already leaning forward, waiting for a bad touch.
Kirio didn't even stop the ball.
Instead of trapping it, Kirio let the ball roll across his body. At the exact second the defender committed to the tackle, Kirio just opened his right foot and let the ball slide past his standing leg. It was a perfect fake. The Eagles player was left completely gapping, his mouth wide open as his own speed carried him flying past. His cleats slipped on the wet grass and he kicked empty air.
With a quick spin on his left heel, Kirio ran right into the gapping hole the defender left behind.
The stadium roar suddenly felt far away, like someone turned the volume down. Kirio's mind was dead silent. He could see the whole midfield opening up like a simple map. Two more Eagles players stepped up to stop him, their faces gapping in shock when they realized their defense was broken.
They thought they had him trapped, but they were just chasing a ghost.
Without stopping, Kirio drove straight into the gapping space in the center of the field. His touches were fast and aggressive. He flicked the ball inside with his left foot, making the next midfielder lean the wrong way, then instantly snapped it back with the outside of his right foot. It was a lightning-fast elastico that left the defender completely unbalanced.
"He's through! Kirio is running into the box!" the commentator yelled into his microphone, sounding completely shocked.
For the first time in the game, the Eagles' defense had to run backward, turning into a gapping mess of panic as Kirio carried the ball forward.
The last two Eagles defenders stopped moving back. They closed in from the left and right like a wall, trying to shut the gapping path to the goal. Behind them, the goalkeeper crouched low, trying to cover the angles.
From the corner of his eye, Kirio saw the red jerseys of his Phoenix teammates running with him, completely free in a gapping pocket of space, waving their hands. "Kirio! Pass it! Pass it!"
Every defender shifted their weight toward the other attackers, fully expecting Number 6 to take the easy way out and pass the ball like he always did.
But Kirio didn't even look at them. The shy boy who used to hide was gone.
With total confidence, Kirio chopped the ball hard with his right foot, faking a pass sideways. The two defenders fell for it completely, lunging outward to stop the pass. The moment they split apart, a gapping shooting lane opened right down the middle.
Kirio didn't hesitate. He didn't worry about missing.
He leaned over the ball, planted his left foot, and smashed the ball hard with his laces. The contact was perfect-a loud thud that echoed through the noise.
The ball flew like a rocket, rising up before dipping down viciously. The Eagles keeper jumped, stretching his fingers as far as he could, but the shot was just too fast and powerful. It blasted straight into the gapping top-right corner of the net, ripping the mesh.
The referee blew his whistle. 2-2
The heavy air inside the stadium still smelled of grass and sweat. On the scoreboard, the red numbers now read 89:50
Ten seconds left. No extra time. This was the final play of the match.
To the five thousand people watching with gapping mouths, the boy in the Jersey Number 6 was a hero now. Kirio was the only player the Eagles were absolutely terrified of.
"Watch Kirio! Double-team him! Don't let him turn!" the Eagles' captain screamed, sounding completely panicked.
The ball was kicked high out of the box, spinning under the bright floodlights and dropping fast near the center circle.
Right away, two Eagles defenders charged at Kirio from both sides, throwing their bodies forward to smash into him before he could control it. The crowd watched with gapping faces, holding their breath.
But Kirio didn't wait for the ball to hit the ground.
As the ball dropped to his chest, he didn't try to control it safely. With perfect clarity, he hit the ball on the volley, cushioning it softly with his laces while spinning his body right between both defenders. It was a beautiful mid-air turn. The two Eagles players smashed hard into each other, leaving a gapping void behind them as Kirio vanished into the open space.
He was clean through. Just Kirio and the goalkeeper's gapping net. The clock ticked to 89:57 minutes
The stadium was incredibly loud, a wall of pure noise, but inside Kirio's mind, it was perfectly quiet. No overthinking. No fear of failing. There was only the ball, the net, and his own hunger to win.
The goalkeeper rushed off his line, spreading his arms wide, leaving his legs gapping open.
Kirio didn't try to chip it. He didn't look to pass. He shot the ball with pure, unbending power, driving it straight through the gapping space underneath the keeper's ribs. The ball slammed into the back of the net with a violent snap just as the clock hit exactly 90:00 minutes
The referee blew the long, final whistle. 3-2.
For one second, the whole world went completely quiet. Then, the stadium absolutely exploded.
"GOAL!! IT'S OVER! KIRIO HAS WON IT IN THE FINAL SECOND!!" The commentator was screaming at the top of his lungs, his voice cracking into pure madness, completely drowned out by the roaring crowd.
Five thousand people jumped in the air, creating a giant wave of noise. The entire Phoenix bench emptied instantly, players and coaches sprinting onto the field like wild animals, throwing their jackets, crying, and screaming at the sky.
Kirio stood right in the middle of the box. He didn't run. Instead, he threw his head back, the veins standing out on his neck, and let out a raw, deafening roar from the bottom of his chest. It was a scream of pure victory, telling the whole world that the scared ghost was dead.
His teammates crashed into him, piling on top of him, crying and pounding his back in the middle of the field. Through the gaps of the crowd, Kirio looked up at the glowing scoreboard one last time.
The game was over. The chains were gone. Kirio had finally arrived.
