A LETTER TO MY FRIEND

(Poem)

By- PRABIR KUMAR DATTA

Rest here peacefully, my friend, lie under this soil,

Let the caring green leaves of the old banyan tree

Comfort you with gentle breeze and chirping birds,

Protect you from the dazzling sun of the summer.

We walked long together in our youthful days,

Took many lofty promises, recited many poems,

Shared dreams together sitting under this tree,

But you never told that you had hurry to go.

We resolved to stay tied for the whole of life.

Forgetting that promise, you silently left alone,

Gave no hint about the call from the unknown,

Kept me in dark about the urgency of the same.

How could you leave me alone on the road of life

With the load of our dreams on my own shoulder,

Was there anyone dearer calling you, my friend,

Was his company more alluring than mine?

I shall have to carry alone now all the songs,

That we used to sing together merrily so long.

Resting in peace alone and forgetting all those,

How could you selfishly leave me, my friend?

You forgot the poor daisies those used to smile

On the sides of our way where we walked daily,

Or the cascading fountain dancing merrily for us

And the whistling birds hovering over our head.

They stiill carry on with their gleeful games,

Hardly noticing the tears wetting my cheeks,

Only with the silent complain for missing you

The purple twilight sky keeps on watching me.

But my friend, you can’t avoid me for ever,

I must be meeting you somewhere someday.

Please don’t turn your face that day from me,

I only beg this small word from you today.
