A Kind of Harmony
A child sat beside a man,
inside a car, parked near a stall.
"What's the color of evil?" The child asked.
"From dark brown to light pinkish white," The man replied.
"And good?"
"The same."
"But Mr. Pritchez said black is evil, white is good."
The man shook his head,
"Oh child, good and evil are deeds of one kind."
"Which kind?"
"The human kind."
She doubted.
"Are people who do evil, bad men?"
His brows drew closer in thought.
"All do evil things, and some good.
That makes them human."
Outside, a woman in red hat
walked toward the stall.
"Isn't that your mother?" The child asked.
He nodded.
"Don't you get bored,
waiting in the car, while she shops?"
The man frowned.
"Aren't we stuck in traffic?"
She looked ahead.
The road was empty.
The car was still.
A clicking sound.
The door opened.
The woman in red hat,
sat in the driver's seat.
He stiffened,
shrinking slightly into his seat.
She picked a candy bar,
out of the shopping bag.
"Does he stay calm?"
The woman asked the girl.
The girl nodded.
The woman handed the candy bar, to him.
The girl said louder,
"Dad, don't be scared.
It's your mother."
He moved closer to the driver's seat,
searching for her face.
"Is it?" he whispered.
The engine started.
The car drove home.
