A Girl was Raped

By Svara Naidoo

You tore her apart from the inside.

Took the thing she would give as a bride

She was just a kid and

you get to walk away.

Untouched for your crimes.

While she lies in a hospital bed bleeding from her thighs.

You gave her something she didn’t want.

You forced yourself inside the only thing she had for herself.

This part of our body that gives life.

You took that away,

and made it a toy

for which you can play

Her dad warned her about boys like you.

But how was she supposed to see your red flags unconscious in a room.

The court is not on a woman’s side.

It’s on yours,

A white boy with a future and life.

While she dies on the

Inside.

A girl was raped -

Did she ask for it?

Was her skirt to short?

We’re her legs to open?

Did you take it upon yourself to fill her deepest desires?

Did she scream them as she pushed you off her?

It’s not in the papers because daddy’s money works great,

but her life is over,

because daddy wasn’t there to keep her safe.

A girl was raped.

And she will never escape the feeling

when she closes her eyes and

feels you scrape at her insides

A girl was raped.

And people will say, she shouldn’t have been there in the first place.

It’s never the boy who shouldn’t have pressed his body inside of me,

It’s me who shouldn’t have been so slutty.

Boys will boys.

Until boys have daughters and

hear them screaming

while boys destroy their lives.

We live in a world where as girls-

It’s inevitable. It’s not, if.

It’s when.

And her when was the 11th of Feb.

We are shackled to fate.

And my voice will shake.

But I will suffocate,

Before I let the men that rape our women,

dictate.

Our mothers who screamed in agony came from roots

that are now trees.

So much time and yet,

We will never be free.
