A Conversation, So Real, So Not

My younger self woke me up at night,

It wasn’t a nightmare-

Just a memory, a hope

A conversation, so real, so not

As I looked into that pair of deep black eyes,

And saw myself reflected in them;

I broke. This was her.

The real me, the one I’d forgotten

The girl that clung onto dad,

Begging for Ice cream…

I couldn’t remember the last time

I’d ate ice cream with my father

The girl that hugged mom,

As she slept smiling...

I couldn’t remember the last time

I hugged my mother

The girl that watched her brother,

Play video games laughing...

I couldn’t remember the last time

I sat with my brother

The girl that walked with her sister,

Holding her hand tightly...

I couldn’t remember the last time

I held my sister’s hand

“Why not?” she asked,

And at that moment I knew.

Because life is a cruel place, I told her

And you grew up; before we saw that

“but what about them? Our family?”

She touched my hand then. I woke

It was a dream.

My younger self woke me up at night

It wasn’t a nightmare-

Just a conversation, real, yet not

I turned and picked up my phone and dialled.

“Hey dad? Can we get ice cream?”
