The Rubic Road

By Shanaya Kacheria

I wondered what it was, when I peered out of my circular bedroom window. It twinkled like little stars in the rays of the early morning sun. It looked like a teeny bottled filled with shimmery sand. It was perched on my window ledge like a bird sitting on a branch. Tempted to touch the bottle, I scooped it into my palm. The bottle gave off a crimson glow which set my palm alight. Not able to resist myself, I opened the bottle.

Whoosh! A whirlpool sprang out of the bottle. I sensed myself being sucked in its crimson glow. Within seconds, I was twirling like a ballerina inside the whirlpool. Something grasped my waist, when I felt myself slip out of the whirlpool. My coffee – brown coloured eyes searched for the whirlpool but strangely it had vanished. An uncanny genie was holding me instead. I was so taken aback that the rising scream in my throat froze. I could sense the genie discerning me with an inquisitive gleam in his glassy eyes.

All of a sudden, he jerked his head up and spoke to me in a booming buoyant voice. “Don’t be afraid of me…. I’m Phoof the genie!.” After saying that, the genie whisked me away to the world where he lived. His world looked weird, with parts of it floating around. Something was wrong inside it and I could not understand what that was. At that moment the genies mirthless laugh pierced my thoughts. Then he told me that his damaged world required to be joined back together. It had been slyly cursed by a pusillanimous evil, a long time ago. Through Phoof’s words; I comprehended that he desperately needed help. Phoof’s unfortunate plight touched my heart and I decided to sort his mess out for him.

I held his smooth hand and promised to think of something. A series of diverse ideas ploughed mu mind. Random things struck it, but none of them sparked to life. Suddenly one part of Phoof’s floating world bumped into another part. Both of them joined together before splitting apart. At once a puzzle flashed across my eyes. Bingo! I had found the solution to mend Phoof’s messed up world.

I requested Phoof to help me gather all the floating parts together. Then I placed them next to each other and corrected them like puzzle pieces. Later Phoof took charge and set his world back together. “Yay” he merrily whopped observing his recovered world with satisfaction.

Soon an overpowering fragrance assaulted my nostrils. White smoke swirled out of Phoof’s palm. “A wish for you!”. He squealed exuberantly holding his palm under my chin. I was overcome with emotion and thanked Phoof gratefully. However, I told him that I would save this precious wish for a rainy day. Phoof gave me a bear-hug and emptied the smoke swirls into the bottle, I had found on my window ledge. I clasped my bottle and bid him a teary farewell when he transported me back home in the same way.
