The Head And The Heart

By Naima Khanna

The head and the heart

A vital pair,

Control over the body

They individually share.

The brain does the thinking

The heart the feeling,

But what plays into consideration

When the time comes to make a decision,

Over what to do

What seems to be more appealing?

The heart is an organ needed

Needed to keep one alive,

A brain they say

An organ needed to thrive,

For what use of a body with no brain

No sense of surroundings or situations,

What real reason to stay.

But a heart does more than pump blood

A heart feels,

It feels a physical feeling

A sensation in your body,

If the heart is happy one appears to be squealing,

If the heart is sad the person appears to be grieving,

If the heart is in pain

The body tries healing.

The brain and the heart often disagree

In many matters,

Because the first relies on rational thinking

And the latter on feeling.

The heart is like a child

Who takes action free of thinking about the consequences,

Action free of weight

Free of pain,

It just wants to relish in joy

Just not to go through ache,

Aches probably arriving

Arriving with the decision the head makes.

The brain is like a parent

Trying to protect the child from hurt,

Hurt that they know will come

A consequence that is apparent.

To feel or to think

An age-old question,

To submit or resist

And deal with the lesson.

Often humans submit

Giving in to the blissful feeling,

They say the mind manipulates

But the heart does too,

It takes the decision

A decision that is most likely to be a rue,

But what does it matter

For it feels right,

And to the heart what matters more

Than feelings and feelings

All other things despite.

So choose discerningly

The heart or the head,

Will the heart beat with joy for a few ticks

Or hurt instead.
