Life As You Lose

By Hector Lopez Jaime

those days you wake up realizing

that you’re not a good person &

how that knowledge won’t save you

since the time you need to correct

the course is already gone, has been

for a while by this point, & so

you’re just alone, with no room

left for you in this world

i could be mopey

haven’t had a good drink in a while

but i don’t see how that’ll fix my

mind in the rut

people you don’t remember die

the ones you can’t forget leave

in that absence this mystery forms

& it’ll pump your heart til it bursts

your blood & your sorrows dripping out

on the last cardiovascular beat you hit

with a french exit making you somebody’s mystery

could be i’ve been working

after months of unemployment

it’s a torture that you can’t

live without

i miss a lot of people

who might not think of me

who can’t think any more
