Fanaa (فنا)

By Manahil Wakil

I take another step further into the sea

The sand from the shore, slips beneath my feet

There is chaos in every step that I take

And the sea rattles wildly ready to claim me

The waves are seething now, as they crash and soar repeatedly

And the sky breaks down, it’s downpour consuming me

The raging sky and the roaring sea

Oh, a storm is coming alright

And it’s all for me

The sky and the sea

Rumble in perfect harmony

The maniacal waves and the barbarous lightnings

Oh so ferocious, there was never anything quite like it

The thunder blasts into my ears and my body shakes violently

And the sky continues to send its wrath down upon me

The final stroke. The final lightning.

I see the sky split apart

As the blinding white strikes me with all its fury

One evanescence moment, of its scandalous scandalous touch

And every cell in my body sparks up; burning with electricity.

The waters are now agitated

They’ve long been waiting

My body convulses, I am soaring, ecstasy at its peak

Then just like that the blinding white leaves me

And oh the coarse pain, so all consuming

And it thunders so loud, I can’t even hear myself scream

Limp from the exertion, I crash loudly against the sea

The water devours me, it has been hungry

A lone tear graces the side of my face

As I obliterate in seconds

Whatever then remains of me, floats adrift

فنا; Annihilation.

For just like that, I ceased to exist.
